Goes on Almost Every Salad Sumac Dressing

When it comes to salad dressing, I like to keep it super simple. I’m not a fan of those complicated dressings with 101 ingredients that you have to go out and buy every time you want to try a new salad. Sure, I like to try new salad dressing combinations. But that’s not very often.

I have a go-to salad dressing that I use for basically all of my salads. The best part? It’s only 4 ingredients! Four ingredients that I always have in my pantry. I call it “Goes on Almost Every Salad Sumac Dressing.” Or “Salad dressing” for short.

I’m sure this isn’t the first time Sumac spice is used on a salad. As a matter of fact, one of my closest friends, Hafiza, puts it on her famous salad; “Hafiza’s Salad,” We use Sumac spice on fettoush, and even on tomato cucumber salad. Sumac is a purple colored spice with a tangy citrus flavor. It really is the perfect addition to any salad.

I found, through unofficial research — RE: my own observations of people’s salad-making habits — that you’re either a lemon person or a vinegar person. I, myself, am a vinegar person. I just don’t find that lemons give me the right amount of sourness for my salads. My vinegar love is most probably directly attributed to the fact that my Tayta loves vinegar too. She always used it in her salads. Every dinner table at her house included a bowl of small-chopped salad mixed with her salad dressing combination — olive oil, vinegar, salt and garlic. We call it “Tayta’s Salad.” Noticing a trend here? (Hint: salads named after people).

My four ingredients for Goes on Almost Every Salad Sumac Dressing are olive oil, apple cider vinegar, salt and Sumac. If you’re a lemon-lover, go ahead and swap out the apple cider vinegar for fresh lemon (or lime, if that’s what you prefer). Once you’re hooked on this dressing, I promise you, you’ll be using it on all your salad greens!
